Sun Boxes by Craig Colorusso
Traveling around NC State Campus
April 4 - April 28
ABOUT SUN BOXES
Meditation with Sun Boxes is a sound art installation by Craig Colorusso that revitalizes NC State’s public spaces with a mesmerizing sound bath experience. The artist and the Gregg Museum of Art & Design co-curated this traveling installation in partnership with Centennial Campus Placemaking and NC State University Libraries.
Meditation with Sun Boxes will debut at Centennial Campus during State of the Sciences Week near the powerful public art installation, Reds & Whites, and then travel to various NC State campuses, including the Gregg Museum of Art & Design’s great lawn.
This self-guided outdoor art experience invites participants to connect with public spaces in a new way through meditation and exploration. As you stroll through these serene environments, you’ll encounter 20 speakers, each playing a distinct guitar note that converges to create the harmonious Bb6 chord. The soothing sounds form a perfect backdrop for mindfulness, encouraging wandering, pauses, and reflection. Experience the captivating realm of Sun Boxes, an extraordinary solar-powered sound installation by the talented artist Craig Colorusso.
The schedule is provided below for locations and activities of where the “Sunnies” are traveling between April 8 – 25, 2025 on NC State’s campus. In case of inclement weather and no sunlight, the Sun Boxes will not be deployed that day at their location.

CRAIG COLORUSSO
“I create sound and light installations across the United States–in deserts, in cities, in rural spaces–that deepen listeners’ engagement with nature.”
My works encourage people to become more present through meditative, ambient sensory experiences. People can encounter my works on their own, with friends, or with strangers–but I also activate my installations with art and education experiences, in partnership with artists across the country. My art is for people of all ages to experience.

An Arkansan by way of Connecticut, I began my career as part of the 1980s punk rock scene and spent much of my time outdoors working in construction, which gave me foundational knowledge as a sound installation artist. My six permanent and semi-permanent works have included MB 89, Sun Boxes, and Sound Swings, and Moon Pod. My works have toured 32 U.S. states and Doha, Qatar.
