An outdoor textile installation by artist Danielle Hatch

‘Of Pleasure, Of Curiosity, Of Intelligence’

Of Pleasure, Of Curiosity, Of Intelligence is an outdoor textile installation by artist Danielle Hatch, who explores the Gregg Museum’s location as a meeting point between the NC State campus and the broader Raleigh community. Hatch examines the ‘town and gown’ concept and its ties to NC State’s textile history, emphasizing patterns and dressmaking as expressions of feminine identity. Hatch found inspiration from the histories of dressmaker Willie Otey Kay and housekeeper Hattie Ruffin– both strong women icons of North Carolina, highlighting women’s labor and its connection to textiles and garment production. The installation’s shapes, colors, and dimensions are drawn from the artist’s research and conversations with museum staff and community members about the Gregg Museum’s Historic Chancellor’s House with housekeeper Hattie Ruffin and the museum’s recent past exhibition, Material Messages: The Tales that Textiles Tell.

Danielle Hatch

Danielle Hatch is an Arkansas-based multidisciplinary artist who explores the female body’s relationship to the built environment, notions of artificiality and power structures through site-specific installations, sculptures and performances. Hatch has recently been accepted as a featured artist for the 2025 Venice Biennial US Architecture Pavilion. Her work has been exhibited nationally at the AD&A Museum, Santa Barbara; Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville; Mid-America Arts Alliance’s Culture Lab, Kansas City; and the Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art, Reston. This installation has been developed through a collaborative process between Danielle Hatch, the Gregg Museum Director, Sara Segerlin, Wilson College of Textiles Professor Dr. Traci Lamar, and NC State’s College of Design’s Art2Wear student group who co-curated the exhibition, Art2Wear: Through the Archives.
