Mission
The Gregg Museum of Art & Design at NC State University sparks creativity and encourages exploration through engaging exhibitions, relevant programming, and thought-provoking educational experiences. Focusing on outstanding examples of art, craft, and design, the museum utilizes cross disciplinary collaborations and its extensive collections to foster critical thinking and expand worldviews. The Gregg serves its diverse campus community and the greater Triangle region in a welcoming, accessible, and inclusive environment.
History
The Gregg did not begin as a museum; it became one.
In the 1960s, NC State Chancellor John Caldwell and School of Design Dean Henry Kamphoefner sought to enhance NC State’s mission by starting to acquire and exhibit art in classroom areas reflecting the university’s curricula. By the late 1970s, this evolved into the Visual Arts Program. In 1992, it became the Visual Arts Center (eventually renamed the Gallery of Art & Design), housed in an annex attached to Talley Student Center, and maintaining a collection that was projected to grow to 5000 objects (today there are more than 50,000!).
In 2007, the museum was renamed the Gregg Museum of Art & Design to honor John and Nancy Gregg, who had long committed themselves to the realization of a collecting and exhibiting art and design museum on NC State’s campus.
In May 2013 the Gregg moved from the annex at Talley to a temporary space near J.C. Raulston Arboretum, while its new facility was built at the former Chancellor’s Residence at 1903 Hillsborough Street, just across Pullen Road from the Memorial Belltower. The Gregg Museum reopened there on August 26, 2017.
People
The Gregg Museum’s staff includes professionals in the areas of collections care, education, visitor services and security, operation, marketing communication, art preparation, and management. In addition, a dedicated group of student employees serve as museum ambassadors, program assistants, and collections interns.

Facilities
The Gregg Museum is located at 1903 Hillsborough Street at the northern tip of Pullen Park, directly across Pullen Road from the College of Design, Holladay Hall, and the Memorial Belltower. Surrounding the galleries and administration buildings are several acres of landscaped gardens and lawns suitable for picnics or recreation. The museum maintains an offsite facility forsotrage of additional collections items and museum materials.
Activities
- Exhibitions – The museum mounts several rotating exhibitions in its gallery spaces each year, so that something new will be on view with nearly every visit. The museum also offers online virtual tours through this website.
- Tours – Docents and staff lead regular guided tours as well as customized art encounters at special request.
- Artist talks – Every exhibition includes opportunities to meet the artists and/or organizers involved.
- Screenings – These range from exhibition-related documentaries to holiday fun, and are projected outdoors in the gardens or in the galleries, as appropriate.
